Kenny Hill is the most recent Aggie quarterback to lose the starting spot to a younger scholarship player and subsequently transfer. But he is just one instance of what seems to be a reoccurring problem.
It all started when redshirt freshman Johnny Manziel beat out sophomore Jameill Showers for the starting position in 2012. Showers backed up Johnny through the 2012 season before he transferred to UTEP. Later that year, redshirt freshman Matt Davis saw that his chances to play behind a Heisman winning quarterback would be limited. He transferred to Tyler Junior College in August of 2013. The Aggies enter the 2014 season in a rather precarious situation. True sophomore Kenny Hill and true freshman Kyle Allen are the only scholarship quarterbacks on the roster. And while both are very talented and capable of leading the Aggies in the post-Manziel era, the lack of numbers is enough to make any coach cringe. To make matters worse, A&M plays in the vicious SEC West and tees off against two of the top defensive teams from the SEC East. Depth is crucial and Aggies need to hope that the two quarterbacks stay injury free this season.

A&M has recently established a tradition of excellence at the quarterback position. In 2012, A&M saw Ryan Tannehill get drafted #8 to the Miami Dolphins. Just last month, Johnny Manziel became the second Aggie quarterback in a 2 year span to be drafted in the first round. And it doesn’t stop there. The Aggies are stocked with talent and have several former quarterbacks poised to start at other FBS schools.

Kyle Allen comes in as A&M’s highest ranking quarterback recruit since Reggie McNeal. However, the 5-star recruit may be the top pro-style quarterback A&M has ever landed. With offers from Alabama, UCLA, Arizona, Notre Dame, and Ohio St, Kyle Allen shocked the nation with his decision to leave the PAC-12 area and join the Aggies in the SEC.
