Since our last recruiting update, the Ags have had some movement in adding running back (Trayveon Williams), offensive lineman (Kellen Diesch), and safety (Ikenna Okeke), but also losing tight end (Zarrian Holcombe). At this time, there are 18 recruits verbally committed to A&M for the 2016 class.
Below is a recap of the current commits, potential targets, and overview of each position group on offense.
Current Commits: None
Possible Targets: None
Overview: The Aggies are sitting pat with their current roster of QB’s and have no plans to add a 2016 recruit at this position. The real recruiting effort will be ensuring that neither Kyle Allen nor Kyler Murray transfer.
Current Commits: Rakeem Boyd (3-star recruit), Trayveon Williams (4-star recruit)
Possible Targets: Devwah Whaley (4-star recruit)
Overview: The Aggies got their guy when they managed to flip 4-star Trayveon Williams from TCU to A&M. However, if Devwah Whaley ended up picking A&M over Arkansas and Texas, coach Sumlin would certainly make room. Regardless, A&M stands to have much more depth in 2016 despite the graduation of Tra Carson. In addition to the aforementioned recruits, James White, Keith Ford (transfer), and Kendall Bussey (redshirted) are ready to plug and play.
Current Commits: Kendrick Rogers (3-star recruit), Quartney Davis (4-star recruit)
Possible Targets: Tyrie Cleveland (4-star recruit), Jack Jones (4-star recruit)
Overview: After stockpiling talent at wide receiver the past 3 years, the Aggies have reached a point of critical mass so to speak. All four starters return next season including most of the 2-deep. The negative recruiting perception utilized by rival coaches is that A&M has too much talent and it’s impossible to gain any playing time. Aggie coaches are fighting this perception and trying to reel in Tyrie Clevelend, Jack Jones, or both.
Current Commits: Irvin Smith (3-star recruit)
Possible Targets: Thaddeus Moss (3-star recruit)
Overview: After Zarrian Holcombe decommitted, the coaching staff went out and offered Randy Moss’ son, Thad. The Aggies once again underutilized tight ends during the 2015 season, which makes it peculiar that they are trying to bring in two 2016 recruits for the position.
Current Commits: Austin Anderson (3-star recruit), Riley Anderson (3-star recruit), Kellen Diesch (4-star recruit),
Colton Prater (3-star recruit)
Possible Targets: Greg Little (5-star recruit), Patrick Hudson (5-star recruit), Frank Martin III (4-star recruit), Ryan McCollum (3-star recruit)
Overview: The 2016 offensive line needs help in the worst way. According to PFF, the 2015 offensive line finished the season 8th best in pass blocking efficiency in the SEC. We’re a long way from the Mike Sherman groomed 2012 and 2013 groups. To make matters worse, the highest graded players (Mike Matthews and Germain Ifedi) are NFL bound. Add another starter, Joe Cheek, to the mix and A&M is looking to replace 3 of 5 starters. Pairing an elite talent like Greg Little or Patrick Hudson to the current crop of commits would go a long way towards a smoother transition.
