There is a great deal of smoke coming out of Baton Rouge. Reports have run rampant this morning and afternoon claiming a deal has been struck between A&M’s Kevin Sumlin and LSU’s John Chavis for the Aggies vacant defensive coordinator position.
Chavis would reportedly receive a 4-year deal worth 1.7 million per year. LSU is offering him just a 3-year deal of approximately 1.3 million per year. Sumlin has proven to be quite the recruiter with top 10 classes the past two years and a third on the way. But if Sumlin is able to steal “The Chief” away from LSU, it will be his biggest and best coup yet.
Since becoming LSU’s defensive coordinator in 2009, Chavis has fielded a defense that has given up an average of 308.4 yards, good for 12th nationally. His best defense was in 2011 where LSU held opponents to just 261.5 yards and 11.3 points en route to a national championship appearance. With other defensive stints in Tennessee and Alabama, John Chavis would bring a wealth of SEC experience to this A&M squad.
