After a much needed bye week, the Aggies face a team that is 0-3 in the Sun Belt so far. Not exactly stellar competition for a November matchup. Yet, for a brief time on Wednesday, the whole nation was buzzing about A&M thanks to our stellar equipment guys.
Apparently, each helmet took approximately 6 man hours to put together. It shows too with the stitching, faux rust, and leathery appearance. The Aggies pay tribute to the 75th anniversary of Texas A&M’s 1939 National Championship with this throwback uniform. And if you’re interested in getting your hands on one of these helmets, they retail for a cool $2,300.
The Aggies kick off against University Louisiana-Monroe at 11:00AM C.T. in College Station. The game will be televised on SEC Network.
The Warhawks are getting the short end of the stick with this matchup. Coach Sumlin is coming off his worst loss ever and he’s mad. Scoring 0 points in a game is unacceptable to him and he made sure the players and media knew it this week. No one got fired…. yet. But there will be a number of new faces starting on Saturday including one at the QB position. On top of that, the Aggies had a bye week to “get back to the basics” which apparently meant some very physical practices.
ULM simply doesn’t stand a chance here. They are outmatched at every single position and have lost 4 of their past 5 games by a combined 149-68. The last team to beat them was Coach Franchione at Texas State. Yes, they are THAT bad. Look for Sumlin and the Aggies to harness all of the frustration from 3 consecutive losses upon the Warhawks.
Texas A&M Preview
Word leaked yesterday evening that Kyle Allen would earn the start for the Aggies. It makes sense as Kenny Hill has scored just as many points for the opposition (one pick-six and another scoop-and-score) as he has for A&M the past two games. Meanwhile, Allen has just accounted for 264 yards, 3 touchdowns, and 2 interceptions in limited playing time. His 60.5% completion rate and 6.95 yards per attempt are less than stellar. However, something needs to be done. Sumlin’s offense which is known for putting up huge numbers has been held to 0 points in 6 of the last 8 quarters. Something needs to change
Giving Allen the opportunity to start for the ULM game is smart for a number of reasons. First and foremost, it proves that the coaches are willing to make a change when the starters are not performing. For much of this season, we have seen guys give less than maximum effort but still get to stay in the game. Secondly, inserting Allen into the lineup during a bye week gave him extra time to work with the starters. And having the easier competition of ULM to get into rhythm will be key if he is to have success later on in the season. Finally, this decision is smart because the coaches can’t lose. According to Maroon Report’s poll following the Bama loss, 81.19% want to see Kyle Allen start the rest of the season. If Allen does great tomorrow, then the coaches can stick with him throughout the season. If he does poorly, then the coaches will have shown the fans that Kenny Hill is the better option for now and can roll with him going forward. Either way, Allen starting is the best choice regardless of outcome.
It’s an early game so that calls for some breakfast food. Stop by La Bodega, home of the best breakfast tacos in College Station (sorry Torchy’s). Located in the northern part of the Northgate district, this spot provides the perfect location to grab a bite to eat and then head on down to your favorite bar.
And with it being the day after Halloween, wouldn’t it be rather appropriate to visit the bar that both Johnny Manziel and Kenny Hill made famous? Head over to Chimey’s, also on the northern side of Northgate, and have one of their famous margaritas.
This team has had to go 2 full weeks with the sour taste of 59-0. They’ve had enough. The coaches are pissed. The players are hungry. The opponent has no idea the massacre that is about to unfold. Kyle Allen takes over the reins and absolutely dominates. The players leave no doubt when it comes to effort. Defense is swarming. The receivers play with a mean streak. The linebackers fill gaps and hit hard. Ags roll 52-10.
