Today we begin a recruiting series that will highlight the top recruiting targets the A&M coaching staff is still looking to land in 2015. There are 6-8 spots left and several elite prospects in the fold. To see the 2015 recruits that have already committed click here.
The 5-star linebacker is exactly what this coaching staff needs as they look to return the defense to ‘Wrecking Crew’ status. Currently, the linebacker depth chart consists of 2 seniors and underclassman everywhere else. And with no linebackers from 2014 redshirting, the Aggies desperately need to add depth and talent to this position group. Enter Malik Jefferson who is #1 player in Texas and the 22nd best player nationally. Malik has explosiveness and speed that few linebackers possess while carrying a frame of 6’3” 215lbs.
At the Nike Opening this summer, Malik shocked the nation with his 4.39 40-yard dash. This time was better than any NFL linebacker has posted since 2006. He also ran a 4.19 shuttle and notched a 39.7 inch vertical. This coupled with his 40 time gave him the 2nd highest SPARQ score, only behind Aggie target Kirk Merritt.
This past Thursday, Sumlin flew to see one of Jefferson’s games in the Swagcopter (which, for what it’s worth, is undefeated following the commitments from Ricky Seals-Jones, Myles Garrett, and Kyler Murray). Unfortunately, Jefferson suffered an injury resulting in concussion like symptoms and was obviously not played the remainder of the game. Here’s to wishing Malik a recovery as fast as his 40 time.
