Coach Sumlin pulled in another commit last night. This time he didn’t have to go far to get him. Outstide linebacker Riley Garner is a 3-star prospect (247Sports) out of A&M Consolidated in College Station. He is a rising prospect that held offers from Texas A&M, Arkansas, Colorado, and Utah. But he was already drawing heavy interest from Texas and Alabama.
The under-the-radar prospect had a monster junior season racking up 110 tackles, 23 tackles for loss, 11 sacks, 22 QB hurries, 4 fumble recoveries, and 2 defensive TD’s. And with a 6’3” 215lbs frame, he has the ability to get his weight up to an ideal 230lbs-235lbs. In addition to his size, Garner boasts a 4.52 forty, a 4.25 shuttle, and a 36 inch vertical. He has great hand/eye coordination that translates well in his pass defense. Perhaps most important is his high motor. He constantly chases down defenders, never gives up on plays, and looks to create and recover turnovers whenever he can. Coach Snyder has indicated that he plans to play him at the Sam linebacker position.
Last season Riley Garner earned first team All-District honors in District 14 5A, but his favorite accomplishment was receiving that A&M offer on May 15th. Following the offer he took to twitter to announce his excitement,
“Beyond blessed to have been offered by Texas A&M today! Thanks to Coach Sumlin for the great call today.” And then following his commitment, “Committed [to] play football at Texas A&M University!! Gigem!”
Needless to say, Riley Garner was thrilled to receive the Texas A&M offer as he only took a week to choose the Aggies over other suitors. Following the commitment he shed light on his Aggie background,
“I’ve been an Aggie all my life. Both my parents graduated from A&M. I’ve always been an Aggie fan. I’m not necessarily quite the diehard crazy Aggie fan like a lot of people in College Station are but I’ve always loved A&M. I always root for them and, like all fans, I get a little angry when they lose.”
